Midsummer ushers in the Summer Solstice, while ancient traditions celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. On June 21, the themed event of Sino-Russian Intangible Cultural Heritage International Study Tour & Dragon Boat Festival Cultural Exchange successfully concluded at Mabajia World Intangible Cultural Heritage Tea Workshop, the demonstration camp operated by the Ambassador Reception Hall in Tongzhou, Beijing. Centering on traditional Dragon Boat Festival folk customs and focusing on the communication of intangible cultural heritage, the event innovated the cross-border study exchange mode for Chinese and Russian teenagers, building an international friendly platform for cultural mutual learning and people-to-people connectivity between the two countries.

Guided by UNESCO International Center for the Protection and Development of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICHPDC), the whole event was planned and organized by Beijing Working Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance and Communication. Ms. Liu Shuang, Deputy Secretary-General of ICHPDC and World Intangible Cultural Heritage International Communication Ambassador, attended the scene for on-site guidance. Ms. Yelena, Rotating Chairperson of Beijing Working Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance and Communication and Russian international guest, led the Russian parent-child study group to carry out in-depth cultural research and study. Ms. Ma Miao, founder of Mabajia, accompanied the group throughout the activity, carefully arranging the study schedule and managing every detail to ensure the high-standard and high-quality completion of this cross-border Sino-Russian ICH study tour.

The Sino-Russian international ICH exchange officially kicked off in the morning. Chinese and foreign guests as well as participating families gathered at the workshop with harmonious, warm and lively communication atmosphere. As the core practical course of this international study tour integrated with Dragon Boat Festival heritage culture, a zongzi-making handicraft classroom was specially arranged. Staff systematically introduced the origin, cultural meanings and connotations of the Dragon Boat Festival, demonstrated the complete procedures and key skills of traditional zongzi wrapping, delivering a professional and systematic lesson on Chinese folk intangible heritage to the Russian group.

During the study session, all members of the Russian parent-child group took part in immersive learning and hands-on practice. Parents and children watched demonstrations carefully and practiced repeatedly, gradually mastering the whole set of traditional skills including unfolding reed leaves, filling glutinous rice, adding fillings, shaping, folding and binding, and finally finished zongzi independently. Through hands-on creation, they experienced the charm of Dragon Boat Festival craftsmanship and the ritual charm and profound cultural heritage of traditional Chinese festivals. Meanwhile, diversified activities including folk custom tasting, heritage popularization and cultural interaction were arranged, enabling overseas young participants to fully appreciate the profoundness of fine traditional Chinese culture.  Breaking language barriers and geographical gaps, this Sino-Russian ICH study tour focuses on international friendly exchanges and cross-border cultural education among youngsters. Taking traditional festivals as the bond and immersive heritage experience as the carrier, the activity enables overseas teenagers to access, experience, learn and spread Chinese intangible heritage at close range, realizing multi-dimensional values including practical study, cultural edification and international communication.
