Artist Rain Lin’s solo exhibition MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC | 布山水 opened in Finland as the first stop of its Europe and China touring program.
The exhibition presents the artist’s latest paintings, which integrate fabric, collage, and painting to explore a “mindscape” formed through the interweaving of memory, time, and nature.
Rain Lin is the founder of the original fashion label “Meaning”. Through fifteen years of fashion design practice, she developed a profound understanding of materials. In this exhibition, she incorporates preserved fabric samples from her design career into her paintings, transforming textiles from clothing materials into artistic mediums carrying memory, time, and lived experience.
Based in Finland, Rain Lin draws inspiration from the tranquility, vastness, and changing light of the Nordic landscape.
Her works reinterpret shanshui not as the representation of a specific scenery, but as a spiritual space shaped by memory, perception, and emotion. Through the interplay of fabric and landscape imagery, the exhibition creates a visual realm connecting body, memory, and nature, revealing the artist’s unique exploration between fashion design and contemporary painting.

《布山水|MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC》
____ Riikka Haapalainen

Exhibition Preface
Rain Lin’s
MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC
_____Riikka Haapalainen
There are a lot of paintings. They fill the entire studio space, leaning against the walls, resting on racks and shelves. Rain Lin tells that there are even more artworks; the others are stored elsewhere. The abundant number of paintings makes their serial nature evident, as does the fact that they lack individual titles. They are manifestations of a visual and painterly continuum:
MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC .
The title of the series offers one possible clue to their reading. Through the title, for example, they connect to the tradition of landscape painting, albeit with a slight modernist twist.
MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC series do not serve as “windows to nature” in the manner of Renaissance paintings; they make no attempt to naturalistically represent the surrounding world. Being more subjective, they take the viewer to more ambiguous and poetic scenes: to mental landscapes; to poetic thinking and imagination.
One can enter this poetic imagination evoked by the paintings in various ways and from multiple angles. For example, the series can be viewed as a collection of inoperative maps that rather disorient than guide. They invite you to stay.
The perspective in the series floats, which also allows multiple ways of reading. The use of central perspective would have created hierarchical structures between the painterly elements and pictorial subjects. It would also have reduced the viewer's perspective to a single viewing position. With these mental landscapes, the viewer is free to make their own decisions about the ways and manners at which their gaze moves across the painted surfaces, about how to observe the forms and material qualities of the artworks, and about which brushstrokes and other elements to follow.
Rain Lin knows that oil colour is a slow working partner. One must wait a long time, allowing a thin layer of paint to dry before adding a new one. She finds this waiting rewarding: the more layers are added, the richer the colours of the painting become.
The misty, softly luminous colour palette of this series is given a relief-like texture by fabric patches that have been crumpled, spread out, and painted into the canvas. They are concrete reminders of Rain Lin’s personal history, from the time when she worked as a fashion designer in China. The fabric samples invite us to examine the series through the notion of assemblage developed by the French artist Jean Dubuffet in the 1950s. In assemblages, various pre-existing materials are incorporated into the structure of the painting. In Rain Lin’s paintings, these fabric samples covered in oil paint act as elements of mindscape.
They create materialised spaces and poetic structures for the eye to grasp.
The French philosopher Gaston Bachelard has described how poetic images always possess their own materiality.
According to him, contemplating matters of materiality encourages imagination that is not constrained by the materiality underpinning those forms. Thus, even before Rain Lin began painting her mental landscapes, she must have imagined their material aspects: the colour fields and dynamics, the volumes of the fabric swatches—until the mental landscapes had detached themselves into their own agencies.
The long tradition of landscape painting has generated meaningful ways in which individuals have been able to situate and contextualize themselves as part of the world. Rain Lin also describes how her long walks, Finnish nature and silence are incorporated into her paintings alongside Chinese cultural heritage. Mindscape in Fabric series materialises the artist's position in relation to these different influences—though these influences are depicted in an ambiguous manner, without explicit references.
Landscapes of the mind float, spread out, and take shape without a direct or clearly defined connection to any actual landscapes. Their beauty is neither unambiguous nor simplistic: it eludes capture. It also eludes words and categorization. In Rain Lin’s studio, the paintings speak and communicate with one another in a manner that is rich and full of colour.
In the exhibition installations, they reorganize themselves into new wholes and modes of reading, into a new kind of MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC.

Rain Lin
MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC
Artist Statement
_____ Rain Lin
During my studies at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, I founded and ran an independent designer fashion brand in Guangzhou called "JuYu • Meaning". Fashion design was once an important way for me to understand the world and express myself. Through fabric, tailoring, and the body, I developed my own language. After moving to Finland, I continued to run the brand for many years before gradually closing my fashion business in China. The creation and development of this brand has been intertwined with fifteen years of my artistic practice and personal journey.
I sent to Finland the fashion design samples I had preserved over the years. These materials, once part of my fashion practice, have now entered my painting process, becoming a bridge between past and present and allowing my artistic practice to evolve naturally from fashion into painting.
These preserved design samples carry layers of memory and traces of time. They document my artistic development and bear witness to my passion, exploration, struggles, and growth across different stages of life. To me, they are not simply remnants of design work; they feel almost like my children, carrying emotion, time, and lived experience. When I touch these fabrics again, they become more than materials—they open a renewed dialogue between past and present through the act of making.
This exhibition, MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC, explores fabric as a central medium in my painting practice, combining the material presence of cloth with the spiritual essence of Chinese landscape painting. In my understanding, landscape is not merely a depiction of nature, but a reflection of the mind and an inner spiritual space. Likewise, fabric is not only a physical material, but also a carrier of memory, time, emotion, and lived experience. Through the textures, layers, and traces of fabric, I seek to reinterpret the spirit of xieyi (freehand expression) in Chinese landscape painting and translate it into a contemporary visual language, creating a “mindscape” rooted in personal experience and inner emotion.
My choice of landscape as a theme comes from two main sources. On one hand, I have always been deeply influenced by the Chinese tradition of expressing nature, spirit, and state of mind through landscape painting. On the other hand, it is also rooted in my life in Finland. Art has always been rooted in life. Living in Finland, I have been continuously moved by nature. The vast lakes, forests, shifting light, and changing seasons, together with the quiet and poetic atmosphere of the landscape, have become an essential source of inspiration for my work. The openness and silence of Nordic nature have helped me understand landscape not only as scenery, but as a projection of inner perception and consciousness. Its calmness, freedom, and stillness have deeply shaped the way I see and paint. I hope to bring together the cultural spirit of Chinese landscape painting and my lived experience in Finland, creating works that hold both Eastern poetic sensibility and the emotional texture of contemporary life.
My painting practice is deeply influenced by the traditional Chinese spirit of xieyi. I am drawn to the expressive qualities of Chinese ink painting and guohua, especially its fluid brushwork and liberated lines, which carry a sense of vitality beyond representation. At the same time, I am strongly influenced by Western painting, particularly its emotional use of colour, and I have a deep appreciation for Expressionism. I am drawn to its intensity, where emotion is not restrained but directly released through brushwork, colour, and form, creating works that feel sincere, free, and full of life force.
In my work, I aim to integrate the poetic and spiritual sensibility of Eastern xieyi, the chromatic sensibility of Western painting,
and the expressive intensity of Expressionism. I want my paintings to hold the openness and rhythm of Eastern aesthetics while embracing the immediacy and emotional tension of contemporary painting.I often work in a gestural, abstract, and almost graffiti-like way, allowing lines, brushstrokes, and colour to unfold freely, existing between control and spontaneity. At the same time, I continue to explore new possibilities of materials and media, using contemporary artistic language to express inner experience and spiritual landscapes—an ongoing direction in my practice.
In MINDSCAPE IN FABRIC, landscape is not merely scenery, but a spiritual space; fabric is not merely material, but a carrier of memory, time, and lived experience.
