Steeds Gallop into Spring: Degao Folk Museum Hosts Fantastic Chinese New Year Show
The Degao Folk Museum in Xiangcheng City was absolutely buzzing on the morning of 6th February. With drums pounding and cymbals clashing, they kicked off their Spring Festival show, "Steeds Gallop into Spring: Intangible Cultural Heritage and Farming Traditions Take Centre Stage", in the museum's fourth exhibition hall. It was a real treat for locals – a wonderful mix of folk customs, farming culture, and heritage performances to welcome the Year of the Horse.

The event was supported by the Henan Collectors' Association and the Xiangcheng Municipal Publicity Department, and organised by the local culture and tourism bureau and the city's literary association. Several museums and cultural groups joined forces to make it happen, including the Zhoukou Museum and the Degao Folk Museum itself.
Li Xinzhong, who's on the Standing Committee of the Xiangcheng People's Congress and runs the Degao Museum, joined hundreds of local folks to soak up the festive atmosphere. Liu Shuang, Chair of the Beijing Intangible Cultural Heritage Communication Working Committee, sent a warm congratulatory message to Li Peipei – who's both Deputy Curator of the museum and Deputy Secretary-General of Liu's committee. Liu praised the museum's hard work in keeping traditional farming culture and heritage alive.

Things got underway at 10 am with a cracking lion dance – the performers had the crowd cheering from the get-go. Li Peipei then stepped up to give a speech. She looked back on everything the museum had achieved over the past year – building up their collection, putting on exhibitions, running educational programmes – and thanked everyone who'd supported them. Looking ahead, she promised the museum would keep championing folk traditions and serving up quality cultural experiences for the public.
The show was packed with brilliant performances – traditional opera, folk dances, live heritage craft demonstrations – all showcasing the unique culture of eastern Henan. Visitors could also check out displays of old farming tools, get stuck into some folk craft activities, and take home calligraphy blessings for the new year.

This Spring Festival event wasn't just about giving locals a good time during the holidays – it also showed how museums can breathe new life into heritage and bring it closer to people. It certainly added something special to Xiangcheng's cultural scene and its efforts to preserve intangible heritage.
