Speech by Dean Li Chengyi, President of Beijing Chengyi Institute of Medical Research

Title: From Tianfu to Harvard: In Search of a Common Language of Life

Distinguished Professors of Harvard University, scholars from East and West, ladies and gentlemen:

Good morning, everyone! I am Li Chengyi, President of the Beijing Chengyi Institute of Medical Research. It is my great pleasure to be invited to participate in today's "Chinese Culture Thousand-Mile Journey Enters Harvard — Harvard East-West Cultural Exchange Symposium"!

I am truly delighted to once again return to the Harvard podium. Every time I engage in intellectual exchange with you distinguished scholars, I deeply feel that cross-civilizational dialogue spanning mountains and seas has long become an unspoken academic rapport between us.

In June, Boston's Charles River is caressed by gentle breezes and surrounded by lush greenery. In this hall that has witnessed the evolution of human civilization and nurtured countless intellectual giants, I sense not only the depth of academia but also a pulse of civilization that transcends distance. This reminds me of a line from the I Ching (Book of Changes): "Observe the patterns of heaven to understand the changes of the seasons; observe the patterns of humanity to transform the world." Today, we gather here precisely to "observe" the "patterns" of civilization and to "transform" the "world" of humanity.

Western medicine, represented by Harvard, is like a meticulous engineer. It deconstructs the human body, analyzes cells, genes, and molecules, and demonstrates unparalleled precision and power in fighting diseases. This is the ultimate expression of "technique."

Eastern medicine, on the other hand, views the human body as a microcosm of the universe, emphasizing "unity of heaven and humanity" and "balance of yin and yang." It is less like repairing a machine and more like regulating the flow of a river. My "Penetrating Acupoint Therapy" works by mobilizing meridian energy to stimulate the body's inherent self-healing potential. This is the wisdom of the "Way."

Though the two paths seem divergent, they ultimately converge. One excels in "confrontation," directly targeting the lesion; the other excels in "harmonization," strengthening the body's resistance and dispelling pathogens. In today's increasingly complex landscape of cancer treatment and chronic disease management, neither the sharpness of the scalpel alone nor the gentleness of herbal remedies alone can adequately address the challenges facing all of humanity. Only when Harvard's scalpel meets Eastern meridian theory, and when gene sequencing technology meets TCM's concept of "preventive treatment," can medicine truly possess a complete suit of armor to protect life.

As a Chief Scientist for the Inheritance and Innovation of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I am fully aware that science and technology are the primary productive forces, while the exchange and mutual learning of civilizations are the primary life force.

In today's world, conflicts and divides still exist. Yet in the face of medicine and health — a shared proposition of all humankind — we have no reason to erect barriers. Science seeks truth; the humanities seek goodness. The union of truth and goodness is the highest realm of medicine and, indeed, of all disciplines.

Dear friends, we are living in an era of great transformation. Artificial intelligence and biotechnology are advancing at an unprecedented pace, yet they cannot replace the healer's compassion, nor can they substitute for mutual understanding among civilizations.

As President of the World Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research, I hope to build a bridge. This bridge is not meant for the East to replace the West, nor for the West to assimilate the East, but for both to stand side by side, to gaze at each other, and to accomplish one another.

I am a healer, and also a traveler. I walk between East and West, trying with a single silver needle to stitch together the chasms of cognition, and with a single herbal decoction to harmonize the yin and yang of civilizations.

Let us join hands and advance together — no longer bound by the divide of East and West, but with all of humanity in our hearts. Let medicine return to its humanistic roots, and let culture break down its barriers. What we are here to write together is not the medical history of any one country, but the health history of all humankind!

May we take this as a starting point, allowing ancient wisdom to be reborn amidst the tides of modernization, and allowing scientific rationality to be elevated in the radiance of the humanities.

I wish Harvard eternal youth, and I wish that the flowers of Eastern and Western civilizations bear their richest fruits this June!

Thank you all! I wish the Harvard East-West Cultural Exchange Symposium a complete success!

Crossing Mountains and Seas for the Harvard Appointment

This journey's most meaningful stop — entering the world's top academic institution, Harvard University, to engage in in-depth cultural exchanges with its professors. I was honored to take the stage and deliver a speech, sharing the wisdom of traditional Chinese culture and the insights contained in From Tianfu to Harvard: In Search of a Common Language of Life. The response was enthusiastic, and many scholars expressed their appreciation. After the speech, Professor Uché B. Amaechi — Chair of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Facilitator of Transformative Leadership Foundations, and Lecturer in Education — signed and posed for a photo, and presented me with the certificate of "Harvard Ambassador for East-West Cultural Exchange." This certificate is not only recognition of years of dedicated study of Chinese culture but also a new starting point for spreading Eastern civilization to the world.

Using From Tianfu to Harvard: In Search of a Common Language of Life as a bridge, we aim to build a dialogue between Eastern and Western civilizations. Going forward, I will remain true to my original aspirations and carry forward the Chinese cultural heritage with unwavering passion, so that the millennia-old wisdom of China may reach the world and illuminate all directions.

The "Chinese Culture Thousand-Mile Journey" event, held concurrently with the World Cup, aims to introduce traditional Chinese culture — including TCM and intangible cultural heritage — to the world through the platform of this premier global sporting event. Dean Li Chengyi stated that he will seize this opportunity to promote the global dissemination of TCM culture and allow the world to appreciate the unique charm of Eastern medicine.
